"This is what I know of our Grandmother, Mary Ghanety [sic] Towey Weir. She was born in County Wexford, Ireland. Our Grandmother lived on Broadway, New York City. Our Father, Hugh Towey, was born there in 1835. I do not know the month. One brother, Peter Towey, was older than him - one younger, Patrick Towey. Our grandmother's brother, Patrick Ghanety [sic] lived in Galveston. He was a Civil Engineer. He [was] laid off [by] the City of Galveston. Our Grandmother came to visit him, and when she went back home, our Grandfather Towey had died of that terrible Cholera that had struck New York. She came back to her brother's - her youngest son being then nine months old. On the boat she met our step-grandfather Robert Weir. She had known him only two weeks when she married him.
My father told me that they came here to Refugio with the Power Hewitson Colony, that Mother got scared of the Indians, that she went back to New Orleans. That, she said, is how Bridget, Mary Ellen, and Bob was born in New Orleans. Then after the quarantine for Yellow Fever was over, she came here to Texas - San Patricio - the year of 1850. Robert Weir was born in New Orleans on May 26, 1846. Bridget Annette Weir was born in New Orleans the 15th day of October 1839 - was eleven years old when she came to San Patricio. She married Tim Conlan in Corpus Christi in 1867. I do not know our Aunt Mamie's birthdate.
Our uncle Peter Towey lived in St. Louis, had two sons. His sons' names, I think, was Willie and Henry. Our Aunt's name was Margaret. When Peter Towey died, there was a letter sent to us. Uncle Willie Weir went to see him one time."
