North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser (Vic.: 1895 - 1913) Fri 19 Oct 1906. [1] NORTH MELBOURNE POLICE. COURT. MONDAY, Oct. 15. Before Dr. Lloyd (chairman), and' Messrs. Barwise, and. Fuller, Js.P. LARCENY. Madeline Clark and Theresa Geraghty were charged with stealing a quilt, value 27/-, the property of Andrew Murphy. Andrew Murphy said that he resided in Chetwynd-st., and identified the quilt produced as his. On a date he did not remember he had it on a clothes line erected on a vacant piece of land near Gardiner-st. Witness had permission to use this piece of land as a drying ground. He valued the quilt at 27/-. He did not know accused. Robert Kane said that he was manager of a pawnshop at the corner of Victoria and Howard-sts, and on the 2nd the two accused pledged the quilt produced with him for 4/-. Just after a little girl named Mary Murphy came in and said the quilt belonged to her people, and witness pointed out to her the way the women had gone. Constable Schreck, said that from what he was told he arrested Clark on the 2nd, and Constable Burns, of Bourke st. west, arrested the other prisoner. The defence was that the women had been drinking, and had been persuaded to pawn-the quilt by another woman. They were each fined 20/- or 14 days.
