Volgens oorlewering is hy op die skip na die Kaap gebore en is sy moeder by sy geboorte oorlede. Aan die Kaap word hy aangeneem deur Johanna Christina Rekkerse v.d. K.

Dit is moontlik dat hy n seun was van Frans Anthonie Gerber wat in 1758 as soldaat na die Kaap gekom het.
