Captain Jacob Gearhart, along with members of the Hunterdon County Militia under his command, collected the boats necessary for crossing the Delaware River on the night of December 25–26, 1776 prior to the Battle of Trenton.

"Jacob Gearhart was born in 1735, in Strasbourg, then a city of France, now [in 1911] belonging to Germany, and came to the New World when a young man, landing at New York in 1754. He soon went over into Hunterdon county NJ where he had his home for many years. When the war broke out, he was among he first to offer his services to his adopted country, enlisting in 1775 the Hunterdon county volunteers with which he served as a private. A man of brave and fearless spirit he was soon promoted to ensign and later to captain, and stood so high in the confidence of his superior officers that he was one of the two New Jersey men chosen by Washington to take charge of the crossing of the Delaware on the eventful night of Dec 25, 1776, when the Hessian camp at Trenton was attacked." Who Collected the Boats ?[1]

In one of the conflicts in which Gearhart was engaged, he was severely wounded in the leg by a bullet. It remained imbedded in his limb through life, but in after years worked itself out so as to become visible under the skin. Advised by a surgeon to have it removed, the old hero replied, “No, I got that bullet in the Revolution, and I mean to carry it as long as I live.” He had his way; the bullet was buried with him.[2]

Born 1735 Strasbourg, Alsace Lorraine, Germany. [2]

Died 14 Jan 1813. Rush, Northumberland, Pennsylvania, United States.

Residence 1800 Shamokin, Northumberland, Pennsylvania, USA. [3]
