"Knt., of East Thorpe, Great Birch, and Theydon, Essex, son and heir of William Gernon, of East Thorpe, Essex. They had two sons, William and Richard, and two daughters, Alice (wife of Robert Baynard) and Margaret (wife of Ralph de Verley). He took an active part on the side of Simon de Montfort and the insurgent Barons, and fortified his castle at Birch against the King's troops. After the Battle of Evesham, all his lands were seised by Hugh le Bigod on behalf of the king. He was permitted to redeem his lands under the Dictum of Kenilworth. He married (2nd) Hawise de Tregoz, daughter and co-heiress of Geoffrey de Tregoz, of Tolleshunt, Essex. They had two sons, John and Robert." (Ref: MCA)
