Will of William Jerard or Jerarde of Trent, Somerset

Elizabeth Gerrard (daughter of William Gerrard or Jerarde )[1] was born c 1540 (est) in Trent, England.

She married Thomas Martin on the 25th November, 1561 at Trent Somerset (now Dorset)[2] , son of Robert Martyn and Elizabeth Kelway. [3] [4]

These children appear in the Visitation of Dorset
  1. Francis baptised 15th July 1562 at Trent [5]
  2. John 2nd son therefore born between 1563-4, (but probably 1564 see baptisms below)
  3. William born circa 1565 (aet 58 in 1623)
  4. Nicholas baptised the 3rd January 1570/1 at Trent [6] [7]
These children's baptisms were found in the Trent register and may be other children of the couple. It appears from the register that Thomas's brothers Simon and Henry may also have been living/ baptising their children in this parish. No burials for any of the many children were found in the Trent register . (were infants buried in the family chapel at Puddletown? There are many Martin burials but no ages given) All the daughters are mentioned in the will of Elizabeth.
  1. Thomas baptised 20th June 1563 at Trent [8]
  2. Elizabeth baptised 13th November 1567 at Trent [9]
  3. Cisely baptised at Trent the 16th May 1572 [10]
  4. Catherine baptised the 15th? January 1573/4 at Trent [11]

Death, Burial and Will

Elizabeth called herself 'of Parke Pale' when she wrote her will on 30th December 1587. She was buried at Puddletown on 8th January 1587/8. [12]
Elizabeth asked to be buryed in the church or churchyard at Puddletowne. She bequeathed 3s and 4d to that church 'towards the reparing thereof'
Elizabeth left £50 each to her daughters, Elizabeth, Cecill and Katherine to be received at the age of 20 or if they married before that. If all of her daughters died before they received their legacy then £50 was to go to son John and the rest of the money was to be divided between her eldest son Francis, third son William and youngest son Nicholas. Francis, William and John were also left £30 to be paid within a year after their mother's death
The rest of her estate after debts paid was to go to her second son John who was made executor. He was asked to pay the list of debts annexed to the will and to pay £5 a year for his sisters maintenance and pay their £50 legacies when they came of age or were married.
Overseers to the will were James Jerrard gent (also witnessed will, signature spelled Gerrard) and Robert Gifford, yeoman.
The list of debts was long, totalling £58-16-11d. These included a large sum of £35 to her 'brother' Robert Martyn 'for my fine' and one of £10 owed to James Gerrard. One debt was to her Aunt Fauntleroys .The last on the list is intriguing
":Item for my parte towards a Robbery comitted sixtene shillings" [13]

DIsputed Family

It would seem that the John Martin referred to below was born too late to be the son of Thomas Martin and his wife Elizabeth. Thomas the purported father was buried in 1584/5
Elizabeth Jerarde/Gerrade was not called Mary Elizabeth. Middle names are unknown in this period, she was married as Elizabeth and referred to as Elizabeth Martyn in her father's will. This will also confirms that she had young children in the 1560sColeman-5109
John Martin was the son of Thomas Martin and Mary Elizabeth Gerrard who lived at Pale Park in Dorsetshire, England. He came to America as did his brothers. He was living in York County, Virginia in 1650. He had a son Abram Martin who was born in England, but resided in King William County Virginia in 1680. Abram and his wife Elizabeth had four sons and a daughter. The eldest son was John Martin. He was the first of the family to be born in America. He was born ca. 1683 in New Kent County, Virginia and died on 25 March 1756. He represented Caroline and King William Counties in the General Assembly from March 1752 to March 1756 and died during the 1756 session. He married Leticia Lewis in ca. 1702/03. They were the parents of ten children. [14]

Michelle, have replied on your page. Everything is sourced from primary sources. No-one else has done this. I have had no reply to question on G2G about what to do with the son who is supposed to have been living in the New World.

Suggestions please!

sourced as much as I could of bio. Added note, I cannot see how Elizabeth and Thomas can be the parents of a John Martin living in Virginia in 1650 .

Where is the evidence for this? Who are the brothers that are supposed to have gone with him? Why is the mother called Mary Elizabeth?, improbable for this period. (every instance of her in the record is just Elizabeth) If second son John Martin had a son why is it not mentioned in the visitation of 1623. In that, only William, the third sons line is continued which may suggest that his elder brothers Francis and John had died without issue. (John would have been 59 in 1623)

Have transcribed will of her father, written in 1567. He mentions his wife Mary, son Thomas, daughter Julyan Pagys , daughter Elizabeth Marten/Martyn (spelt both ways) and her children but does not name them.

Thomas Martyn was a witness. transcription

Note surname spelt as Jerard/Jerarde .

She is called Elizabeth Gerard in the visitation

She appears to have been born long before the 1565. There is what seems to be her marriage in the Trent register for 1561. (this is likely as the visitation of Dorset 1623 says that her 3rd son William was bout 58 in that year. (ie b c. 1564) Unfortunately the Trent register doesn't go back to the 1540s. I looked for the burial on Nov 18 1599 in the Sherborne register but did not find it. (there was a burial on the day before and a baptism on the 18th, it's a very legible register) Their son John was the second son so born in about 1662/3. He would have been almost 90 in 1650. Unfortunately the source 'Some Martin families' is not available outside a family history library and no copy in any library in England. What evidence does it cite?

Gerard-731 and Gerrard-461 appear to represent the same person because: same name, same spouse, same child, same time frame, same locations
In ref to: Bio and data fields have different locations for death location.

Changed both bio and data field to clear discrepancy. The dates and places can be corrected if source information warrents

Gerrard-461 and Gerrard-114 appear to represent the same person because: Birth date close, spouse. Death is a bit off but not sourced on one.
Gerrard-478 and Gerrard-114 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth, death and parents.
