Biography

This profile is part of the St Helens, Lancashire One Place Study.

Richard Gerrard was born in about 1782-1786 in Lancashire.

Richard married Elizabeth Richardson on 17 Oct 1824 in Huyton by Roby, by licence. Neither had been married before. Richard was of Eccleston in the parish of Prescot, Elizabeth was of the local parish. The witnesses were Peter Langley and Margaret Richardson.

Their son Richard was christened on 12 Jun 1825 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. His father's occupation was recorded as farmer, and the family's address as Eccleston.

Their son Thomas was christened on 25 Dec 1826 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. His father's occupation was recorded as farmer, and the family's address as Eccleston.

Their daughter Mary was christened on 10 Aug 1828 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. Her father's occupation was recorded as farmer, and the family's address as Eccleston.

Their son John was christened on 14 Jul 1830 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. His father's occupation was recorded as farmer, and the family's address as Eccleston.

Their son William was christened on 14 Jul 1833 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. His father's occupation was recorded as farmer, and the family's address as Eccleston.

Their son James was christened on 19 Apr 1835 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. His father's occupation was recorded as farmer, and the family's address as Eccleston.

Their daughter Margaret was born in about 1840 in Lancashire.

By June 6th 1841, the family were living on Mard's (or possibly Maid's) farm, Eccleston. Richard was a farmer. There was one servant in the household, Ellen Arnold, aged 15-19. None of the rest of the household were doing paid work.

It's not certain what type of farm Richard ran, but three of his sons were working for cow keepers in 1851, so it seems likely he kept cows.

Elizabeth died in 1842 in Prescot district, aged 46.

Richard may have died in 1844, with his age recorded as 54, though this isn't very consistent with his age in the 1841 census. At any rate, he's not been found in the censuses after 1841.
