Maria was christened on 09 September 1857 at St John's Church, Burslem, Staffordshire, England. She was the daughter of William Gerrard and Hannah Harris (née Betts), who had been married in Wolstanton, Staffordshire, in 1853. [1] (Note that the spelling of the surname in this record is Gerard).

The record indicates that Maria was resident in Eastgate at the time. [This is presumably Eastgate St, Stafford.]
