Biography

Flag of Staffordshire (adopted 2016)
Maria (Gerrard) Walker was born in Staffordshire, England.

Maria was christened on 09 September 1857 at St John's Church, Burslem, Staffordshire, England. She was the daughter of William Gerrard and Hannah Harris (née Betts), who had been married in Wolstanton, Staffordshire, in 1853. [1] (Note that the spelling of the surname in this record is Gerard).

According to the 1861 census of England and Wales the family was living on East Gate Street in Stafford, the county town of Staffordshire, and consisted of: [2]

William Gerrard, head, age 37, publican, born in Dilham, Staffordshire
Hannah Gerrard, wife, age 34, publican's wife, born in Stone, Staffordshire
Richard Gerrard, son, age 11, born in Dilham
Agnes Ellen Gerrard, daughter, age 7
Sarah Ann Gerrard, daughter, age 6
Maria Louisa Gerrard, daughter, age 3

The 1871 census of England and Wales reports that the family was living in Stafford, the county town of Staffordshire, and consisted of: [3]

William Gerrard, head, age 47, publican, born in Dilhorne, Staffordshire
Hannah Gerrard, wife, age 44, publican's wife, born in Yarnfield, Staffordshire
Richard Harris, son-in-law, age 21, joiner, born in Dilhorne
Agnes Ellen Gerrard, daughter, age 17, born in Burslem
Sarah Ann Gerrard, daughter, age 16, scholar, born in Burslem
Maria Louisa Gerrard, daughter, age 13, scholar, born in Burslem
William Henry Gerrard, son, age 10, scholar born in Stafford
Frances Elizabeth Gerrard, daughter, age 6, scholar, born in Stafford
Sarah Betts, widow, age 67, farmer's wife, born in Coton, Staffordshire

The 1881 census shows that they were living on Eastgate Street, Stafford. Present at the time were: [4]

William Gerrard, head, age 57, publican, born in Forsbrook, Staffordshire
Hannah L Gerrard, wife, age 44, born in Yarnfield
Maria L Gerrard, daughter, age 23, born in Burslem
William Henry Gerrard, son, age 20, born in Stafford
Frances Elizabeth Gerrard, daughter, age 16, born in Stafford

On 11 November 1882 she married George Garston Walker in Stafford. [5] The record indicates that Maria was resident in Eastgate at the time. [This is presumably Eastgate St, Stafford.]

Gerrard-1155 and Gerrard-599 appear to represent the same person because: same husband, roughly the same date of birth, many children in common
