Biography

I, Stephen W. Gerrard, was born near Metz in Marion County, WV, the son of the late James William and Laura (Cross) Gerrard. I am a direct descendant of Rev. John Garard who settled in present-day Gerrardstown, Berkeley County, WV through his son William.

I have been researching this line of the Gerrard family off-and-on for nearly twenty years and, as most have discovered, there is a lot of missing and incorrect information confounded by the various spellings of the surname and repeated first names of various family members. However, as a problem solver, I have enjoyed this challenge and have begun writing a book on Rev, Garard and his pioneering descendants. This has been a fulfilling, although arduous process which I hope to complete in the not so distant future.

Hi Stephen!

Thanks for self-certifying for the Pre-1700 badge! Collaboration with Pre-1700 Project members is essential for those wishing to edit Pre-1700 profiles. Collaboration is essential because those ancestors are usually shared by many descendants.

It looks like the US Southern Colonies Project or the France Project would be a good fit based on your branch of WikiTree. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Do you have any questions? Let me know. I'm happy to help! :-)

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage, or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

What is in the name. In my research of the Gerrard family, I have found about 6 different ways it being spelled. Something to keep in mind, many of our ancestors didn't read or write. I have seen it Jirard, Garret, Gerrard,Garard, Gerard, Garrard, Jarrard, and others. This is within 3 generation of the ancestor that was illiterate. I found one could follow a branch by how they spelled "Gerrard". In the end, I feel there is not a right or wrong to spell it.
