Richard was born in the second quarter of 1857 in the district of Maidstone, Kent, England. [1]
He was the son of Joseph Gerrard and Alice Hutson.
The family was living on Alfred Place, North Aylesford, Strood, Kent at the time of the 1861 census. [2]
The family moved to Hackney, London, before the 1871 census. At the age of 14, Richard was employed as an errand boy. [3]
There is a gap in the record before Richard appears in the 1891 census with a family. His wife is Eliza (maiden surname unknown) and their children, all born in London, are:
Henry Gerrard, born around 1878
Herbert Gerrard, born around 1880
Frederick Gerrard, born around 1882
Jessie Gerrard, born around 1885
Edith Gerrard, born around 1888
Arthur Gerrard, born around 1891
The census indicates that the family lives on Pomeroy Street, Greenwich, London. Richard is listed as a carpenter. [4]
Register of Electors
The Electoral Register for London first lists Richard in 1890, when the family's abode is listed as 30 Dennett's Road, which is close to Peckham and Nunhead. [5]
In 1891, confirming the census, the address has changed, as the family are now occupying 39 Pomeroy Street in Peckham. [6] The same address applies in 1892.
There is a Richard Gerrard in the 1911 and 1912 Electoral Registers who has rented 2 rooms unfurnished (for 7 shillings a week) at 36 Laurie Grove. [7] Is this the same person?
Research note
It is not 100 per cent certain that the Richard Gerrard who married Eliza and lived in Greenwich is the same person as Richard Gerrard son of Joseph and Alice. However, the husband of Eliza has the right year of birth and was born in Kent (according to the 1891 census), so it is likely to be true in the absence of other evidence.
