Biography

Harriet was born in 1869 near Herne Bay, Kent, England. She was the daughter of Joseph Gerrard and Alice Hutson. Her birth was registered in the first quarter of 1869 in Hackney, London, England. ^[1]

At the age of 2 she was living with her mother, 5 siblings and various other people in the parish of St John at Hackney, London. ^[2]

Ten years later, at the 1881 census, she was still living with her mother and four of her siblings, although the residence was now on Glenarm Road in Hackney. ^[3]

She married in around 1887. Her husband was James Fowler, an auctioneer. Their children included

• Alfred Charles Edwin Fowler, born on 03 July 1887 in Clapton, London and baptised on 07 August 1887 in Hackney; ^[4] his birth was registered in the third quarter of the year in Hackney, Middlesex ^[5]
• Lilian Jane Fowler, born on 04 February 1889 in the district of Hackney, Middlesex ^[6] and christened on 13 October 1893 in Hackney. ^[7]

Lilian's birth record shows that the family home was 6 St Thomas' Square.

In 1891, at the age of 22, Harriet was living on St Thomas' Square with her mother and her brother, along with her two children. She was listed under her married name of Fowler and, indeed, was still married at the time, but her husband was absent. ^[8]
