Joseph was born about 1874 in Lancashire, England. He is the son of Thomas Gerrard and Margaret Judge.
Per the 1891 census, at the time he was an inmate at the Rochdale Union Workhouse.
In 1895 he was out of the workhouse and living in Manchester working as a shopkeeper.
By 1900 he had joined the crew of the ship "Tauric" and was in port in Liverpool, Lancashire, England. He shows on Electoral Registers in 1904-05 still in Liverpool.
After 1905 there are no records for him so unable to confirm when or where he passed away.
