William was born in 1801 in Manchester, Lancashire, England. He was the son of Peter Gerrard and Mary Jones. On 16 Mar 1840 he married Mary Gill (nee Cooper). They had 3 children (1 her daughter from prior marriage whom he adopted). They remained in Lancashire throughout their lives. Then, on 9 Feb 1884 he was admitted to the institution in Haydock, Lancashire as he was a "pauper lunatic". He remained here until he passed away on 7 Nov 1885[1].
