Biography

Alfred was born in 1882. He was the son of James Gerrard and Rachel Nelson.

The USA carried out a census in 1900. The record for San Francisco, CA shows the Gerrard family living at 1910 Broadway Street. Alfred was at the time an 18-year-old artist and designer. [1]

The 1910 census of San Francisco, CA (Assembly District 41) shows Alfred as a 26-year-old commercial artist living with his parents and siblings at 1908 Broadway Street, San Francisco. [2]

He married Margaret Golden on 23 September 1911 in San Francisco. [3]

In 1918 Alfred was issued with his draft registration card. It identifies him as a 36-year-old commercial artist employed by the Commercial Art Company of 53 Third St, San Francisco and living at 1910 Broadway. His wife is named as Margaret Gabril Gerrard, of 146 McAllister, San Francisco. [4]

Alfred is a little harder to find in the 1920 census, as he was called "Alfred Gerhard"; he was living with his wife "Margett" at 146 Mc Allister, San Francisco. He was described as a commercial artist, Margett as a housewife. [5] There were no children living with them - in fact, there seems to be no record that they ever had children.

By the time of the 1930 census, Alfred was already a widower, living at 910 Geary Street, San Francisco, with a miscellaneous collection of people, none of whom were related to him. His profession was listed as "artist", involved in studio work. [6]

Alfred's draft registration card, issued in 1942, makes it clear that he was a resident of the Laguna Honda Home in the Forest Hill district of San Francisco. His stated age was 59, and he did not name any close family. [7]

He passed away on 13 July 1952 in San Francisco.
