Biography

George Gerrard was born in Scotland.

George Gerrard was born in Markinch, Fife, on 10 September 1817 and was the eldest son of James Gerrard and Helen Mitchell.^[1]

George married Mary Connell in the parish of Falkirk on 29 June 1838 and they had eight children.^[2]

On the 1841 census, George, a nailer, and Mary are living in the village of Camelon with their eldest son, James, who is 10 months. They also have three lodgers staying with them.^[3] On the 1851 census, George, a nailer, and Mary are living in Camelon with their children: James (10 years), Mary (7 years), William (5 years) and Thomas (1 year). Another son, Thomas, born in 1847, died in infancy. The eldest son, James, has become a nailer like his father.^[4]

On the 1861 census, George, a nailer, and Mary are living on Sth Side Of Street, Camelon, with their children: William (15 years), Thomas (11 years), Helen (5 years) and George (1 year). Another son, George, born in 1858, died in infancy. Their daughter, Helen, born in 1855, would die in 1862.^[5] On the 1871 census, George, a labourer, and Mary are living with their three sons: William (25 years), Thomas (21 years) and George (11 years). William is a nailer and Thomas is an apprentice iron moulder.^[6]

On the 1881 census, George, a labourer, and Mary are living on Main St, Camelon, with their grandson, Henry Gerrard, who is 2 years. Henry's mother, Janet Binnie, died in 1880. George and Mary also have their son, William, and his wife, Ann, staying with them along with their adopted daughter, Elizabeth.^[7] On the 1891 census, George, a nailer, and Mary are living on Main St, Camelon, with their oldest son, William, who is visiting and their grandson, George Gerrard (18 years), who is a tailor.^[8]

George Gerrard died of old age, aged 77 years, on 18 August 1895.^[9]
