Jan Gerrits, easily distinguished in many later records by the inclusion of "vulgo Jan Michielen", is widely believed to be the son of Gerrit Dirricxsen (spelling of father's patronym varies widely) and Aertjen Jans. Jan was born at Heerewaarden in 1644. [1] It is unknown how Jan came to be vulgo (commonly known as) Jan Michielen, as mother Aertjen Jans was next married to a Jacob Janzen. [2]

Accepting that Jan has been associated with the correct parents his siblings include:

  1. Arisken (b. 2 Jul 1642)
  2. Dirrick (b. 17 Apr 1647)
  3. Dirrixken (b. 23 Sep 1649)

Jan was married at Heerewaarden on 11 June 1669 to Jantjien Peters [3]

Children associated with this couple [4] include:

  1. Anneken (b. 28 Sep 1669)
  2. Gerrit (b. 17 Dec 1671)
  3. Dirck (b. 4 Feb 1675)
  4. Dirck (b. 27 Feb 1676)

  2. NOTE: The names of children associated with the Jan that married Jantien Peters suggest the Jan's parents are correct. Researchers should be aware that there was another Jan Gerrits baptized at Heerewaarden in 1644 son of Gerrit Aertsen and Jenneken Goerts.

  4. Some genealogies suggest Lijsken Ton who married Willem Spiegel in 1687 and died the year following, is also a child of this union and give her birth as 1666, 3 years prior to the marriage of Jan and Jantien. No evidence has been examined to date that supports this belief.
