Biography

From History of the Mohawk Valley:[1]

  • "Jan Luykase Wyngaard settled above present Hoffmans Ferry on the south river shore in 1686. He fled from this at the time of the Schenectady massacre [1690], and bought a town lot which included the later Givens Hotel in Schenectady."

Luykas Gerritse was a resident of the city of Albany. He married Anna van Hoesen. They had at least nine children.[2] Lucas and Anna had several children before records begin in Albany, but two were baptized in the Albany Dutch church.

He was a baker by profession, but Albany historian Stefan Bielinski suggests that "he probably used that talent to have tradeable commodities with which to barter for furs."[2]

He was elected assistant alderman for the second ward of Albany, initially in 1686, and sat on the city council for portions of three decades.[2]

He and Anna made a joint will on 30 October 1709,, providing legacies to youngest son Luycas, eldest son Gerrit, Gerrit's son Luycas Gerrits, and youngest daughter Marya.[2]
