I have learned that there are two different men named Dirck Gerretsen (or variant spellings of that name) who apparently have been conflated in these profiles, which seem to be based mostly on content copied from online family trees.

The Dirck who married Geertje Hendricks died by 1686 and left as heirs widow Geertje Hendricks and one son named Garret. He is the man whose family took the name Van Duyn or Van Dien. He is not the father of Jonas. This profile -- and also the profile identified as a duplicate to this one -- appears to represent him.

The Dirck (or Derrick) who is thought to be the father of Jonas (and several other children) apparently was married to a woman named Mary. He was alive as of 1703.

I will disconnect Jonas from this profile.

The Jonas referred to in the above comment is Jonas Gerretson, Gerretson-2.

Gerritsz van Dien-1 and Garrison-2343 appear to represent the same person because: same name and spouse.

Note: Garrison is not this man's LNAB. The profile is in the Needs LNAB category to alert project members to the need to determine correct naming and it is project-protected to prevent merge until correct LNAB has been confirmed.

Ellen, that's fine. But I came across the obvious duplicate and thus proposed the merge. His wife and son each have duplicates as well. Has any discussion taken place to determine his LNAB? If not, do you want me to post on G2G to get the ball rolling or would you like to do it? Thanks.

I added that comment in case someone else sees your merge proposal and assumes that Garrison is determined to be his LNAB. It clearly is not -- it is not a Dutch name, but a variant adopted by descendants who lived among English-speaking people.

Based on the church records we have from New Netherland, his LNAB would be Gerritszen. Before I change the LNAB, I need to see what records (if any) exist from his immigration or earlier.

It turns out that this is not going to be a simple matter of determining one man's LNAB. See separate comment.

Thanks for your work on this! Much appreciated!
Gerritszen means "Son of Gerrit", so it's patronymic, not LNAB... I don't know enough about history of Netherlands, but I've seen older profiles with proper LNAB.

A lot of so-callled Dutch family names that end with -sz, -se etc. are actually patronymics. -se is used both for sons and daughters, but -sz is exclusively for sons (short for -szen).

One of the driving forces for name changes such as this, was simple - the Official writing the document was from England, spelled it the way HE was used to (especially since many at that time either couldn't write, or since the Patronymic system had recently been changed, had inconsistencies in their own spellings.)

Garrison as patronymic was short for "Son of Garrett", which was English equivalent of "Gerritszen", "Son of Gerrit".

I've seen a lot of spelling variations in both Dutch and non-Dutch patronymic and matronymic names.

Some families adopted last patronymic as their family names, some, like my own, adopted totally different family name.
