Biography

Maria Catharina Gerst was born to Theobald Gerst and his wife Magdalena Catharina on June 13th 1736 in Sembach not far from the city of Kaiserslautern, nowadays in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. On June 17th she was baptized there. The entry in the churchbook reads:

[1736] Maria Catharina, geb. 13., get. 17. Juni; Eltern: Theobald Gerst, Magdalena Catharina von Sembach, Beyde reform.; Gevattern: H. Andreas Völcker, hochgräfl. Wartenbergischer Jäger zu Sembach, Luth. rel., Maria Catharina, Luth. rel., Caspar Zinn, Gemeindsman zu Sembach, ehel. Haußfrau. [1]

Translation: "Maria Catharina was born on June 13th 1736 and baptized on June 17th; Parents: Theobald Gerst [and his wife] Magdalena Catharina, both of Reformed Religion; Godparents: Mr. Andreas Völcker, huntsman of the noble Earl of Wartenberg here in Sembach, of Lutheranian Religion, and Maria Catharina, Lutheranian wife of Caspar Zinn, local council man in Sembach."

In 1749 she had her Confirmation. The entry in the churchbook gives a list of all the children sorted by place of residence. It says:

1749, April den 4. sint folgende Kinder auf Charfreytag der christl. Gemeinde zu Alsenborn vorgestellet worden, und haben den 6. auf Ostern allhie mit Uns zum ersten mahl communiciret. … Von Sembach … Maria Catharina Gerstin, gebohren 1736 den 13. Juni. [2]

Translation: "On Good Friday, April 4th in 1749 the following children were presented to the community in Alsenborn, and on Easter Sunday (the 6th) they celebrated the Holy Communion with us for the first time. ... From Sembach ... Maria Catharina Gerst, born on June 13th 1736."
