August was the son of August GessHulda Peters. [1] He was born in Prussia. His parents emigrated on the Moravia in 1884, along with several children, including August. [2] They traveled to Peoria, Illinois, where they set up their household. [3]
He married Minnie Hartseil in 1902. They had several children.[4]
His son, Fritz Gess, was serving with the 11th Regiment, 5th Infantry Division when he went missing in action crossing the Sauer River from Echternach into Germany in February 1945. He continues to be MIA.
