In 1957, Fortune magazine named Jean Paul Getty the richest living American, and the 1966 Guinness Book of Records named him as the world's richest private citizen, worth an estimated $1.2 billion. Getty was an avid collector of art and antiquities; his collection formed the basis of the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, California.
Getty was born on Dec. 15, 1892 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Sarah Catherine McPherson (Risher) Getty and George Franklin Getty. George was born in 1855 in Allegheny County, Maryland to Martha Ann Wily and John Getty (1835-1861), who was the son of James Getty and the grandson of another John Getty, a Scotch Irish Presbyterian who immigrated to America and was a relative of the namesake of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Shortly after his birth Getty's family moved from Maryland to Ohio where his father died in 1861.
J. Paul married:
Getty died on June 6, 1976 and was buried at the Getty Villa Gravesite in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles County, California.
John was born in 1892. He passed away in 1976.
