Sananda tells us that he was born in the same room of the house that Mejda was born in and given the name Gorakhnath Ghosh, after the famous saint, Gorakhnath of Gorakhpur, from which comes his nickname Gora. However, when he went to school in Calcutta their eldest brother Ananta renamed him Sananda Lal, with his father's approval, to be similar to the names of his older brothers. He inherited their mother's exceptional artistic talent, while photography first became a hobby when he entered College, then his livelihood, including painting photographs in oil. Sananda also learnt the Kriya Yoga technique of meditation and was initiated by Mejda's Master Swami Sri Yukteswar. He painted portraits of Mahatma Ghandi and the great poet Rabindranath Tagore, and his desire was to spread his brother's spiritual message throughout the world through his art. He married Parul in 1914 and had 3 boys and 1 girl with her. Copies of 15 letters written from 1947 to 1952 by his brother Paramahansa are reproduced in Sananda's book. He died aged 81.
