Biography

Francesco Giallonardo was born March 21, 1860, in Villa Santa Lucia (later known as Villa Santa Lucia degli Abruzzi), L’Aquila, Italy, to Berardino Giallonardo and Vincenza del Monte.^[1] On January 26, 1883, he married Anna Giantomasso in Villa Santa Lucia.^[2] They had two children: Angela and Gregorio, both born in Villa Santa Lucia.^[3][4] Francesco was in the United States by the time his son was born, and there is no indication he ever returned to Italy. In fact, his marriage to Anna appeared to have ended before her death in 1894.^[5] On September 12, 1895, he married Carmela Frazzetti in Milford, Massachusetts.^[6] Curiously, the marriage record identifies him as “Frank Smitt” and indicates the marriage is his first. Francesco and Carmela had two children: James, who was born in Milford,^[7] and Anna, who was born in Millis, Massachusetts.^[8][9] The family was enumerated in Boston two months after Anna’s birth.^[10] The family soon moved back to the area, living on Oakland Street in Medway, Massachusetts. They were enumerated with the last name “Smith” in the 1910 and 1920 US Censuses.^[11][12] In the 1930 US Census he was enumerated using his birth name.^[13] His children, however, continued to retain the family name of Smith.^[14] Francesco died March 11, 1932, in Milford, Massachusetts.^[15] He was buried in St. Joseph Cemetery in Medway, with is daughter-in-law and grandson.^[16] His wife Carmela died in 1939 and was buried separately.^[17]
