Biography

Birth

On 30 May 1914 David Stewart Gibb was born in New Zealand to George Gibb and Alice Anna Burgess.

Education

In December 1926 he was dux of the Preparatory School, St Andrew's College, Christchurch [1]

In 1935 he was at Canterbury College. [2]

War Service

In WW II he was a squadron Leader in the RNZAF.

In August 1942 he was awarded theDistinguished Flying Cross (DFC). [3] and in February 1944 he was Mentioned In Despatches.[4]

Flight record for raids led by Squadron Leader David Gibb of 75 (NZ) Squadron: [5]

  • 18/11/1943 – Attack Against Targets at Mannheim, Germany - Nineteen aircraft were detailed to attack the above targets with bombs of 2,000lbs and incendiaries of 30 lb and 4 lbs.- a successful bombing rid.
  • 26/11/1943 – Mining in the Frisian Islands, Germany - Four aircraft were detailed to carry out the above operations with mines of 1,500lbs., which were dropped, successfully, in the allotted area,
  • 14/01/1944 – Attack against a Special Target - Fifteen aircraft were detailed to attack the above target with bombs of 500 lbs., one aircraft brought its bombs back, owing to a failure of Navigational Aid equipment, and one returned early as it could not maintain height. This attack was successful and concentrated, bombs being seen to drop within the target area. Some A.A. fire was encountered, but caused no trouble.
  • 25/01/1944 – Attack against a Special Target - Twenty aircraft were detailed to attack the above target with bombs of 500 lbs. One aircraft failed to take-off, & four brought their bombs back. The remainder however, successfully dropped their bombs in the target area. This operation did not appear to be very successful, the bombing being rather scattered, some large explosions were seen,
  • 28/01/1944 – Mining in the Kiel Bay, Germany - Nineteen aircraft were detailed to carry out the above operation with mines of 1,500 lbs. Three aircraft returned early, two dropped their mines in alternative areas, but the remainder successfully dropped their mines in the allotted area. Some light and heavy A.A. fire was encountered, and one aircraft received slight damage.
  • 19/02/1944 – Mining in Kiel Bay, Germany - Fifteen aircraft were detailed to lay mines of 1500 lbs from a high level, but two aircraft failed to take off owing to engine trouble. The remaining thirteen aircraft completed their operation without incident, and the pathfinder markers were dropped accurately for the final run, being identified by all.

In 1946 he was a school teacher in Motunau. [6]

Death

On 28 August 1980 David Stewart Gibb passed away in Scargill, North Canterbury aged 65, having been born on 30 May 1914. [10]
