LATEST LOCAL SUDDEN DEATH OF MR W GIBBON

we regret to announce the sudden death, this afternoon, of mr wm gibbon, of stockton road, west hartlepool. mr gibbon, it would appear, was driving along towards the cemetery, when he was seen to fall back. the horse was at once stopped, and a few willing hands lifted the unfortunate gentleman from the conveyance. according to one who thus helped, mr gibbon was dead when taken down. he was, however, laid out in the road and water brought. a message was also sent to dr fred morison and police sergeant leadbitter. the body was afterwards conveyed home. mr gibbon, who was well-known in the town, was a native of west hartlepool - indeed, one of its "old standards". he was aged 63. for a great number of years he carried on the business of a leather merchant. he retired from this a few years ago, and afterwards became associated with sir christopher furness (his brother in law, whose sister he married) in building over the mill house estate, some 300 houses having been put up there. latterly building operations on the middleton grange estate have been supervised by mr gibbon, and a hundred houses erected. mr gibbon was in business an upright man, one whose word to quote a friend who knew him well was his bond. he possessed a stock of sound common sense, but was a homely disposition. he took no particularly active part in either municipal or imperial politics. in politics he was a liberal unionist; in religion a free methodist, worshipping at burbank. last summer mr gibbon consulted a medical specialist for his complaint of heart disease. he made one of his last appearances at a social gathering in the masonic hall, last week, when mr and mrs jos howe celebrated their silver wedding. mr gibbon leaves a widow and several daughters and a son (mr gibbon, of church square), to mourn his loss.

THE LATE MR WM GIBBON INQUEST THIS AFTERNOON

at the west hartlepool police station, this afternoon, an inquest was held by mr w watson, deputy coroner, on the body of mr wm gibbon, whose sad demise was reported in the mail yesterday. william hy gibbon, grange road, son of the deceased, identified the body. any slight exertion, he said, which his father took always caused pains at his heart. he had suffered that way since the back end of last year, and had been getting gradually worse. dr f morison said he was driving along hart road, west hartlepool, on the 5th inst., about 3-20pm. he was asked to stop and see the body of a man. he examined him and found him dead. the body was that of mr gibbon, whom he knew. in his opinion death was due to heart disease. mr francis jones said that about 3pm yesterday afternoon he saw a trap driving past his place of residence, york road. in it was mr gibbon lying further back than necessary. he thought mr gibbon was in a fit. he ran after the trap, and overtook it at the end of camden road, just as a young man stopped it. with the help of two or three other men, he lifted mr gibbon out of the trap, and laid him on the road. dr morison came up and pronounced life extinct. the jury returned a verdict of death by heart disease. the interment is fixed for to-morrow at noon. a service will be held at burbank church.
