OBITUARY
The Late Mr H.T. Gibbons
Few families have been more closely associated with the fortunes of Renmark than the Messrs. Gibbons. The father of the family, the late Mr H Gibbons, came here in the settlement's earliest days and, having had previous experience with timber in the Willowie Forest and elsewhere, with his sons ran a sawmill on the river's bank near what was afterwards known as Wescombe's. Five son's and a daughter (Mrs Pike) spent the greater portion of their lives in Renmark - three of them as settlers and one as a settler's wife. Father and mother are both buried in the Renmark cemetery, and now with the death of "Harry" Gibbons, two of the sons lie beside them.
The death occurred at Renmark on Monday last of Mr Henry Thomas Gibbons in his 56th year. Harry Gibbons was born at Oakbank and came to Renmark 32 years ago. He was an expert builder of pise houses and erected a number of this type of dwelling throughout the town and settlement, including the residences of Messrs Woodward, Morley-Taylor and the late Harry Bovill in the settlement, and those occupied by Mrs Vigar, the convent sisters and the Congregational Church manse.
For a number of years Mr Gibbons carried on a butchery business in conjunction with Mr Tom Johnstone, and on giving this up entered the Federal Club as steward, a position which he held for fourteen years, retiring twelve months ago on account of ill health. He was twice married and had nine children, three of whom are married (Mrs Findlow, of Camperdown Victoria, Mrs R Douglas and Mrs L Smith). His surviving brothers are Messrs E.C. Gibbons (Ted) of Renmark, E.E. (Ned) who lives in Melbourne, and Alfred, now of Adelaide. Mrs H.S. Pike of Renmark is a sister. Mr Gibbons was a good rifle shot and winner of the Pyne Trophy. He did a good deal in his day to keep the Renmark Rifle Club going and at different periods was captain and secretary of the club. He was for some time a town councillor, and as such played his part in advancing the interests of Renmark.
The funeral took place on Tuesday and was conducted by the Rev C.A. Hawke of the Congregational Church. It was marked by the wealth of beautiful floral tributes sent by many friends, including members of the hotel staff, the Federal Club staff, and the local racing club. Mr Gibbons had led a retired life on account of ill health. He was much respected by a wide circle of friends and was well known to all the older settlers of Renmark. [1]
