FATAL OCCURRENCE
A son, aged seven years, of Mr. John Gibbons, landlord of the Golden Cross Hotel, Balhannah, went with two younger brothers to fish in the Onkaparinga River on Saturday, the 28th ultimo, and at dinner the other children returned, stating that their brother intended being home when he had caught more crayfish.
Mr. W. Tirrell subsequently saw one of the boys, who had gone back to the river, and from him, ascertained that Edward Gibbons had been drowned. On reaching the water’s edge the body was seen upright, under the surface of the stream.
It was immediately removed, to the nearest house; but Dr. Esau, J.P., of Woodside, who was at once sent for, was unable to restore animation, death having occurred apparently several hours earlier. The deceased's little brothers saw the body floating in the water, but were at first too frightened to give the alarm. Even if they had promptly told, it would probably have been too late. The doctor considered an inquest needless.[1]
