Herbert Gibbs was born in Surrey, England.

Herbert Mordaunt Gibbs was born in 1875 at Wallington, Surrey, England. He was the son of Herbert Gibbs and Cecilia Rogers.^[1] He traveled to South Australia with his mother and sister on the 'Hesperus' in 1881.^[2] His brother was born shortly before they arrived in Port Adelaide. His father had traveled separately earlier in the year. The family later moved to Western Australia. He passed away from rheumatic fever in Perth in 1893.^[3]

We regret to announce the death of Herbert M. Gibbs, the eldest son of Mr. H. W. Gibbs, of the Survey Department. The deceased, who was a bright and promising youth, caught a severe chill whilst spending his holidays up the river, which was aggravated after he came to Perth, rheumatic fever supervening. Deceased will be buried this afternoon. The deepest sympathy is felt for the bereaved parents. ^[7]
