Marietta (Etta) Parthenia Gibbs was born on 24 May 1844 in Pittsfield, Vermont. She married Cassius Mortimer Clay on 29 Sep 1869 in New Hampshire. They traveled from Vermont to Michigan along the Erie Canal for two years. Then on to Wisconsin and South Dakota, and settled in Butler, Nebraska. They stayed less than a year in each place. They had five children: Ralph, Nellie, Bonnie, Thomas, and Jennie.
Before 1900 they moved to Los Angeles, California. She was told by a friend that her husband Cassius had died in the hurricane in Sep1900 in Galveston, Texas, but a marriage for him in Mexico has been found (2021) showing he was still alive.
Marietta died on 10 Feb 1917 in Los Angeles, California.
