Richard Gibbs was born in 1788. He was orphaned at the age of four and relocated to Vermont where he was raised by a great uncle, Mr. Allen. This Gibbs tree branch descends from John Gibbs, and early settler in Connecticut. His maternal ancestors are John Burr, John Talcot, a Hartford founding father, and Joseph Hawley. Richard brought a carding mill to Rockbridge, possibly about 1819, the same time he married Isabella Poague of Raphine neighborhood.[1] They at at least two children: Hannah (1820) and James (1830). His health began to fail but he continued with the carding business, until the mill was destroyed by fire in 1845. [2]
