Biography

Lucy Gibbs was the daughter of Remembrance Gibbs and Rachel Hall, born in Litchfield, Connecticut, on October 16, 1773.[1] Her gravestone has her age at death in 1854 as "79 yrs.," giving a birth year of 1774-1775. According to Arthur Perry in Origins in Williamstown, Lucy was a cousin of "Lydia Gibbs from Litchfield," wife of Lucy's brother-in-law, Levi Smedley.[2] Lydia Gibbs is supposed to be the daughter of Zebulon Gibbs, Jr., and therefore a granddaughter of Benjamin Gibbs. Remembrance Gibbs was a son of Benjamin Gibbs.

Lucy married Elijah Smedley, son of Nehemiah and Mary (Harwood) Smedley, in Litchfield on October 15, 1791.[2][3][4]

Lucy (Gibbs) Smedley died in Williamstown, on January 19, 1854, "aged 79 yrs." (gravestone); "81 years" (town record).[5] She is buried at Eastlawn Cemetery in Williamstown, where her gravestone reads:

  8. Minerva Smedley, 2nd, October 13, 1806; married (1) June 16 1827, Edwin Norton; (2) Andrew C. Thomas; died February 25, 1891.[22][23][24]
