Margaret (more often called Margaretta) Gibbs was christened on 19 September 1823[1]. She was the daughter of John Gibbs, a shoemaker, and Margaret (or, usually, Margaretta) Gibbs, née Howard.
Margaretta had left home by the 1841 census[2], when she would have been about 18; she was living in Little Shelfod, Cambridgeshire, and probably working as a domestic servant, as she was in the 1851 census[3]. By that time however she had moved to Friern Barnet, in the London borough of Barnet.
In 1853 Margaretta married William Martin in St Luke's, London. She then seems to have moved back to Little Eversden, where she was recorded as a 'labourer' in 1861[6]. She was at that time living with her recently widowed mother, and had a daughter Jane[5]. By the next census[9], her mother had died, but Margaretta had two more children, William[7] and Mary[8]. Her occupation was not recorded, but ten years later in the 1881 census Margaretta was working as a laundress[10]. In all these censuses, Margaretta was described as married, not widowed; husband William's whereabouts are a mystery.
