Orton was born about 1812. He was the son of Calvin Gibbs and Deborah W Shaw and was left in the care of Avery Jones after his father's death according to the Oakland Michigan probate records. He married Minerva Jones in 1830 and they had four known children. In 1833 he purchased about 124 acres in Warren, Michigan. He died in 1842.
