Graduated University of Arkansas in 1942, BA in Geology and Military Science, leading to a commission as 2nd Lt. in the U.S.Army Reserves, and onto 38th Infantry. He boarded the Anne Arundel, an attack transport ship, crossing to Belfast Ireland, then Cardiff Wales, and Omaha Beach on D-Day plus 1. He was active until August 4, 1944 when he was wounded in Normandy by a mortar shell explosion. After discharge, he worked for the State Department of Labor, Employment Security Division.
Eugene is buried in the National Cemetery, Washington Co, Fayetteville, Arkansas
