Biography

George was born 25 July 1856 in Nassau, New Providence, Bahamas.[1] He was the son of Samuel Gibson and Susan Nottage.

He married first Edith Jane Cleare on 8 February 1883 in Key West, Florida, in a ceremony performed by U. Sinclair Bird.[2] The witnesses were F. A. Patterson and Joseph Wm. Sweeting.

He married second, as her second husband, Elizabeth Ann (Pinder) Andrews on 11 October 1922 in Key West in a ceremony performed by J. W. Longam, Methodist Pastor.[3] The witnesses were Mrs. J. W. Longam and Theo E. J. Roberts. It is not clear whether George and Elizabeth divorced. Her death certificate uses the surname Andrews, though it does state that she was married. She and George lived in her house on Southard Street in 1927.[4]

He married third, as her second husband, Grace Estelle (Griffin) Sawyer d/o Uriah Griffin (1835 - 1913) and Matilda Malone Griffin (1838 - 1908), on 28 July 1931 in Key West in a ceremony performed by C. M. Samford, Minister.[5] The witnesses were John A. Griffin and Geraldine Fine.

George died on 20 October 1942 in Key West,[6] and he is buried there in the City Cemetery.[7]

  1. George's full date of birth is carved on his grave stone. Census schedules are not consistent in reporting George's place of birth. The 1900 and 1910 schedules state that he was born in Florida, while the 1930 and 1940 schedules say he was a native of the Bahamas. The argument is answered by his 1885 petition for naturalization, where George swore that he was born in Nassau, New Providence.
