Biography

George Henry Gibson was born in 1865 to Captain George Thomas Gibson and his wife Mary Jane (born Garrett). In 1870, he survived the shipwreck of the "Laughing Water" along with his parents (his father was captain) at Foveaux Strait, South Island, New Zealand. In 1881, he was apprenticed to shipowner James Cole Ellis as an apprentice mariner. Indenture papers signed by his stepfather, Charles Chatfield. In 1884, was sole survivor of shipwreck "Clyde" in Horseshoe Bay, Akaroa, New Zealand. Married Sarah Elizabeth Le Cornu, daughter of a mounted police trooper, in 1895. Had 4 children. Became a Master Mariner. Died of dilation of the heart in 1926 at Balmain Hospital, Sydney.
