Biography

This profile is part of the Gibson Name Study.

[...] Gibson was born about 1395 in Ireby Hall, Lancashire ... buried at Askrigg, Yorkshire.[1][2]

Ireby Manor in Thornton Parish

Manor: "in 1317 it was sold to John de Hornby by John de Tatham. ... In 1338 the manor was settled on Edmund son of John de Hornby and Margaret his wife. There is little to relate of its history. It falls out of sight till the 16th century, when the lordship was held by Redmayne and Claughton," (BHO).[1]

  • Side Note: Joan, dau. of chancellor Thos. Metcalfe and Elizabeth Hertlington (Hartlington), married Christopher Conyers of Marske. She's called "Elizabeth" in the Marske pedigree.[2] ... Christopher is the grandson of Christopher Conyers of Hornby.

Research Notes

LNAB

Both Dugdale and Foster support LNAB as Gibson. Metcalfe (1898), calls her "Gelson of Ireby," in his speculative pedigree. Note that Ireby is in Lancashire.

How many children did Unknown Gibson have?

Sources agree on identity of the wife of James Metcalfe but have different children listed: Fuller-5853 18:43, 8 June 2017 (EDT)
  • Dugdale says James Metcalfe of Nappa married ?, daughter of ? Gibson of Ireby Hall. (marriage is considered doubtful). They had three children: Thomas III, Brian and Miles.[1]
  • Foster has a pedigree chart that is difficult to read that lists Unknown Gibson of Ireby Hall as the wife of James Metcalfe. they had these children: Reginald, Bryan, Myles, Thomas, Joan and possibly Cecelia or Cicely.[2]

alias: Rebecca? name was imported on GEDCOM[citation needed]

Isaac's alias -- Metcalf (1898) -- and LDS ancestral file and Internet spin-offs: Gelsone; Gelson; Beth Gelson, etc...

"Ireby Parish," in History and Topography of the Counties of Cumberland and Westmoreland ... is insightful. A few recognizable allied family names are seen here: Lascelles, Thursby, Musgrave, Middleton.[1] Hornby, Redman (Redmayne).[2]

....

Strange enough ... I don't see any Gibson, esp. not associated with the manor of Ireby or High- or Low Ireby. Maybe that's why Dudgale thought "Gibson of Ireby" was bad genealogy? Hmmm...

Will keep looking, but this person is the only instance of "Gibson" I've seen yet in the historical upper portion of the pedigree. Certainly not common. Come to think of it.... I don't think I've ever ran across a Gibson, except this one. Does the "-son" indicate the Gibsons are of Viking origin?

Another intriguing bit is High Ireby's association with Orme of Ireby, descendant of Gospatric (son of Orme). ... who had a son Adam.[3] Makes me wonder if Isaac's chart has something to do with this?:D
