Matilda was born about 1814 in South Carolina. Her parents are at this time unknown. She is last found in records on the 1870 census in Williamson County, Texas; it is assumed she died before 1880 in Williamson County, Texas.
Matilda married Horatio Shelton on 26 February 1834 in Lauderdale County, Alabama.[1]
Horatio and Matilda left Alabama about 1840 and settled for a few years in Illinois. They left Illinois about 1845/46 and by 1847 were living in Williamson County, Texas. In the household on the 1850 census are children:
Horatio and Matilda moved to Bell County, Texas shortly after 1850. Horatio is listed on the Bell County, Tax Assessment List in 1852.[3] On the 1860 census for Bell County, Horatio is listed as age 47, a carpenter, with land valued at $600 and personal property worth $300. In the household of Horatio and Matilda are children:
Susanna Shelton, age 17, IL
Mark Shelton, age 16, IL
James Shelton, age 13, TX
Mansel [Emanuel] Shelton, age 10, TX
Horatio and Matilda are on the 1870 census in Williamson County, Texas. Horatio is listed as age 57, a carpenter with personal property valued at $100. In the household are sons James Shelton (age 23) and Emanuel Shelton (age 17). Next door is son Mark Shelton and his family[4]
