Biography

James Gibson is said by some to be the son of John Gibson of Lancaster County, Virginia. His year of birth is uncertain but the early 1700's is suggested by the births of his children. Nevertheless, for reasons that are not known, he has been equated with a James Gibson of Dumfries, Scotland, whose christening in 1687 and marriage in 1706 to a woman named Margaret are among the dozens of Scottish church records for a man named James Gibson.[1] Others claim he was born in Ireland.

James married Elenor ______ as evidenced by her being named in deeds. She predeceased her husband. Their family is reconstructed from his will:

  1. Randolph/Randall (c. 1730-c. 1793) - negro named Bumbon
  2. Archibald (c. 1730-) - heirs to receive five shillings
  3. Elizabeth (c. 1740-), m. John Candler - ten pounds current money
  4. Catherine (c. 1740-), m. Meshack Hale - ten pounds current money
  5. Hannah (c. 1740), m. William Cook - ten pounds current money
  6. Joseph Gibson, son-in-law (husband of daughter Mary?) - five shillings current money
  7. heirs of John Gibson - five shillings current money
  8. James - whole estate

30 Aug 1743 - A James Gibson received a patent for 40 1/2 acres begg. &c. corner of Augustine Smiths land, thence &c. to Smith and Col. Churchill on the Green Branch in Middlesex County, Virginia.[2] The location is compatible with the idea that his father was john Gibson of Lancaster County but per se this does not constitute proof.

1748 - In the tithe list of Lunenburg County, Virginia, "from the Mouth of Falling River Upward", taken by John Phelps, we find James Gibson and son Archblad, with Randol Gibson next door.[3] They are also present in 1749 but are absent in 1750, 1751. Falling River is in modern Campbell County, Virginia.

1752 - Lunenburg County. Deed Bk 2, p.486. James Gibson on Elk Creek of Otter/Roanoke River (land that was part of Richard Randolph's 1744 grant on Elk Creek [Virginia Patents #23, 1743-1745, p.766]. This land is in modern Bedford County.

1754 - Bedford County is formed from Lunenburg & Albemarle Counties. The new county was large and included modern Campbell and Franklin.

14 Apr 1764 - Bedford County. James Gibson writes his will. It is probated 26 Feb 1765.

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:

Gibson-19906 and Gibson-5627 appear to represent the same person because: Same wife, same marriage date, same birth and death dates; obviously same person

Gibson-19906 and Gibson-5627 are not ready to be merged because: Different mothers is the main objection. Also in sources, some do not match-up - needs more research.

Gibson-19906 and Gibson-5627 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, same dates, same wife, same will. At merge time unlink the parents and leave a Research Note stating that the parents have been previously asserted to be one or the other of the two sets of parents currently present. Both profiles have the same paternal grandparents.

PMs please review these profiles and determine which of these people was married to the linked spouse and/ or the linked parents.

Either the spouse should not be connected to one of these profiles or the parents are incorrect on one or both of these profiles.

I have re-proposed un matched merge of Gibson-5627 and Gibson-19906. They appear to represent the same person because: same dates, same person, same spouse. There are no sources attached to either profile for the parents.

Parent discrepancy can be added to profile in Uncertain Parent or similar section, as well as in parent's profiles, but that should not hold up merge of duplicate profiles.

Gibson-5627 and Gibson-19906 do not represent the same person because: Check the parents
posted on Gibson-19906 (merged) by Debbie (Johnson) Ferguson
As stated in the proposed merge these profiles are intended to be the same person since dates and spouse are the same. Neither profile has any source to prove the linked parents.

Section should be created for uncertain parents with both possible parents listed, as well as a note on the parents profiles, if there is no sourcing in those either.

Gibson-5627 and Gibson-19906 are not ready to be merged because: It's because of the fathers listed, conflicting. I believe Gibson -19911 is the correct father of the Gibson's 5627 and 19906, and not Gibson-12313. That should be straight first before merging Gibson-19906 and Gibson-5627 ? I think Gibson-19911 and Gibson-12313 are brothers.
posted on Gibson-19906 (merged) by Carol (Holman) Hill
Do you have sources for either person being the parent? If not, especially since they are brothers. The parents can be unlinked from the profiles and put into a research notes or unproven or uncertain parents section until sources can be found. Duplicate profiles should be merged and have the extra section added, which could also be put onto the parents profiles.
