Biography

Captain Abel Gibson served in the War of 1812

Captain Abel Gibson was the last Gibson owner and occupant of the homestead (Gibson Place so-called) on the Saco, was a gentleman of marked ability and enterprise, captain of the militia, member of Main legislature 1842, also holder of other civil offices.

Captain Gibson was a soldier in the War of 1812, entering the service as a Corporal in Captain Philip Eastman's company of artillery, under Colonel James Steele's regular Massachusetts Militia, September 11 to 24, 1814 defense of Portland.

On February 22, 1818 (family record) Captain Gibson married Ann Howard, daughter of Hon. Joseph Howard and Rebecca (Gleason) Howard of Brownfield.

Abel and Ann had the following children:

  1. August Abel Gibson (Colonel in the U.S. Army) , born March 31, 1819, married Sarah Knowles, daughter of Hon. Seth Knowles and Sara (Bridge) Knowles of Boston.
  2. Anne August Gibson, born March 31, 1819 (twin of her brother August) married Thomas McElrath of Macomb.
  3. Joseph Howard Gibson, born August 26, 1821, died of Panama Fever in Boston on December 28, 1852. Never married.
  4. Caroline Elizabeth Gibson, born December 20, 1822, married Hon. James Osgood McMillan, son of General John McMillan.
  5. Annette Matilda Gibson, born August 28, 1824, married Milton Knight of Macomb.
  6. Laura Helen Gibson, born January 19, 1829, died December 11, 1854, unmarried.
  7. Paris Gibson, born July 1, 1830 married Valeria G. Sweet
