Biography

This profile is part of the Gibson Name Study.

Chester was born about 1906. He was the son of Victor Gibson and Alma Smith. He passed away in 1990. [1]

As a child, I never quite understood how a person could live in a 3 room house, with a garden that over-shadowed the house by so much. But I could run though it and pick & eat to my hearts' delight, because Uncle Ches' believed in gardening the old fashioned way; with back-breaking work & lots & lots of sweat. But his onions were almost as sweet as his tomatoes, and the snap beans were fun to 'snap' by the hour, it seemed to a 10 year old. I found his stories of roasting rattle-snake stew and other delights that he as a Chef to Admiral Halsey before his injury; that was a simple fall down some metal battleship stairs, that wiped out several vertebrae. He self medicated, a lot. He never, ever married, but he did have several long time girlfriends. He basically lived in his garden & in this little hole-in-the-wall bar that knew him though good times & bad. Later, when I started driving TaxiCab, this bar became somewhat of a surprise, because no one but me would go there.(!) Later in his life Uncle Ches would often forget who my Mother was, & start flirting with her, Penny, who was his girlfriend, would always take care of the situation. We all loved her for that. I was away when he died, I can only imagine Penny also took care of this; because it seems to be Civil rather than Milatary.
