Lawrence was born about the 18 March 1880 in Wakefield, Richland County, Illinois, United States, he is the son of Asa H Gibson and Adaline Lucretia (Gard) Gibson.

He married Bertha (Mason) Gibson on the 6 February 1907 in Wayne, Illinois, United States, they had about six children;

  1. Russell Gibson, b. 1907 - 2002,
  2. Verl Gibson, b. 1910 - 1984,
  3. Perl Gibson, b. 1910 - 1995,
  4. Trella M (Gibson) McKneelen, b. 1917 - 1984,
  5. Oma Zearing Gibson, b. 1920 - 1992,
  6. Leo T Gibson, b. 1925 - 1925.
