OBITUARY: Jewel (Giddens) Atkins, age 88, died Tuesday, September 1, 2009 in Clayton, New Mexico. Funeral Services were held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, September 4, 2009 at Hass Funeral Home in Clayton with Louis Montoya, officiating. Burial followed in the Clayton Memorial Cemetery by Hass Funeral Directors, Clayton, New Mexico. Jewel Giddens Atkins was born on December 27, 1920, in Red River County, Texas, to James Alison Giddens and Minnie Melverde (Smith) Giddens. She married John Bennett “Ben” Atkins on December 24, 1937, in Hugo, Oklahoma, and he preceded her in death on November 24, 2001. Ben was licensed as a gospel minister in the Baptist Church in 1947, and during their service to the Lord they lived in numerous communities in West Texas and New Mexico where Ben was pastor of a number of Baptist Churches. In addition to her husband and her parents, Jewel was preceded in death by 1 Brother, Jim Giddens, 2 Grandsons, Randy Atkins in 1964 and Jim Ed Atkins in 1994; a great-granddaughter, Brittany Atkins, in 1994 and by a sister-in-law, Myrtle Withrow in 2008.
SURVIVORS:
2 DAUGHTERS: Jody Fenslage and her husband John of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Carolyn Shufeldt of Denver, Colorado.
2 SONS: James Atkins and his wife Connie of Maxwell, New Mexico, and Bill Atkins and his wife Judy of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
1 BROTHER: W. O. Giddens and his wife Ruby of Irving, Texas.
