John was born in 1850. In the 1851 census, he appears with his mother Ann Giddy as an inmate in the Liskeard, Cornwall workhouse (http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Liskeard/). By 1861, he was living with his grandfather in West Looe, Cornwall. He was still in West Looe in 1871, and his occupation in 1871 was Blacksmith.
He married Mary Jane Biddick in Plymouth, Devon in late 1872. They must have gotten to know each other in Cornwall as she appears in censuses there, though she was born in Corfe, Dorset.
By 1881, he had his own household in Plymouth, Devon. The location is shown as Plymouth Charles since they lived in the Charles the Martyr parish. He had a wife and 5 children, and his occupation was Blacksmith. In 1901, he was still living in Plymouth, but was widowed and living with 2 of his children. No occupation was given for him, while his son Joseph Charles was shown as a boilermaker and his daughter Georgina was a Dressmaker. Perhaps he had already retired by 1901. In 1911, he was living with his son Joseph and Joseph's wife Hilda. He was listed as a Retired Blacksmith and was still a widower.
He died in Plymouth, Devon on 7 Mar 1927. Here is his obituary from the Western Morning News: "GIDDY - At the residence of his daughter, 1, Alvington-street, Plymouth, March 7th, John H. Giddy, blacksmith, late of Teatshill, after a long illness, patiently borne. Sadly missed by his six daughters. Funeral leaving the house on Thursday, 2.15 p.m."
According to the probate record, his effects of about 170 pounds were left to his daughter Laura Wingfield (wife of Bernard Alfred Wingfield).
Research Notes
Though some censuses show that he was born in Looe, I think it is more likely that he was born in Liskeard since that is where his birth was registered, and also the earliest available census record for him in 1851 has him both living in and born in Liskeard.
His birth was registered in the 3rd quarter of 1850 in Liskeard, Cornwall, so he would have been born between July and August of 1850 or slightly earlier (e.g. late June). I wasn't able to find any baptismal records. The full birth record should be available from the GRO for a fee.
I wasn't able to find a definite marriage date either, but again this should be available from the GRO for a fee.
You can only see the obituary on FindMyPast, and can't find it using a search. You have to go to the 9 Mar 1927 edition of the Western Morning News and look in the Deaths column on Page 1.
