Biography

Lauretta was born on 28 Mar 1873 in Looe, Cornwall, England. She was the daughter of John Giddy and Mary Biddick. When she was about 5, her family moved to Plymouth, Devon. Her father was a Blacksmith. She appears in the 1881 census in Plymouth as "Lucretia," but all other sources call her Lauretta.

She married Bernard Alfred Wingfield, a Seaman, on 20 Oct 1893 in the Holy Trinity Church in Plymouth. By 1901, they had one daughter, Ruth, and were still living in Plymouth. In 1911, the same situation continued. Apparently they only had one child.

She was listed in the 1939 Register that was done before WW II. At that time, she was living in Plympton, a suburb of Plymouth. She had been widowed by this time and was living on Private Means.

Lauretta died on 17 Feb 1960 at the Greenbank Hospital in Plymouth. Her inheritance of over 2000 pounds was left to Ruth, who by this time was married to Harold Mitchell.

Birth date is from the 1939 Register, and birth place from censuses. Death date and place come from the probate record, and are confirmed by the death registration. Approximate date of move to Plymouth from Cornwall is based on the date the first child was born in Plymouth (1879 - Joseph).
