Biography

Matilda was born on 18 Aug1886 in Plymouth, Devon, England. She was the daughter of John Giddy and Mary Biddick. By 1911, she was working as a Laundry Maid in Sidford, a village in East Devon far from where she grew up. On 20 Jul 1912 she married Frederick John Perry, a gardener. They were married in Sidbury, the nearest town to Sidford. In 1939, they were living in Sidmouth; her occupation was Laundry Worker, and his was Gardener. Presumably they did have at least one child, since their tombstone refers to him as "Dear Husband and Father."

She died on 10 Feb 1967, and is buried in Sidbury cemetery in Sidbury, East Devon. Her tombstone, shared with her husband, reads: In Loving Memory of a Dear Husband and Father, Frederick John Perry, died September 20th, 1952 aged 65 years. Only Good Night. Also of his beloved wife Matilda, died February 10th, 1967 aged 80 years.

Research Notes

Date of birth comes from 1939 Register, while place of birth comes from censuses and birth registration.

The image of the marriage record on FindMyPast shows that her father was John Henry Giddy, whose occupation was Blacksmith. I think the reason she was married so far from her family in Plymouth is that she had moved to Sidbury to work as a servant. She married another servant, a gardener. The 1911 census shows her working as a laundry maid in the area, and shows that she had been born in Plymouth.

The FindAGrave page has a photo of the tombstone quoted above, and if you magnify it, it is readable. This gives a definite date for her death, as well as her husband's. I am assuming she died in Sidbury since that's where they lived in 1939, because she is buried in Sidbury, and because her death was registered in the Honiton district, which includes Sidbury.
