Biography

Johannes was born about 1869 in Kimberley.[1] He was the son of Frederick Coenraad Giesing and Catharina Wilhelmina Elizabeth Pretorius.[2][1]

Johannes Lodewicus Giessing, a 39 year old Batchelor was married to Elizabeth Susanna Scanlan (age 23) from Driefontein, Kroonstad on 26 March 1912.[3] [1]

He passed away on 30 November 1917 at his house in Kruger Street, Potchefstroom.[1]

He left four children.[1]

From his civil death notice we can glean that he was a butcher by trade and that he died of enteritis and exhaustion after 8 days of illness.[4]

Children named on his death notice are:

  • Gertruida Johanna Giesing [1]
  • Catharina Elizabetha Wilhelmina Giesing [1]
  • Willem George Hendrik [1] Born 6 October 1915 and baptised in Potchefstroom on 2 April 1916.[5]Born on 6 October1915 and baptised on 2 April 1916 in Potchefstroom [6]

Research Notes

Something does not make sense here:

Children baptised by father with same name and same mother (Elizabeth Sussan Scanlen Giessing) not appearing on death notice:

  • Johannes Lodewicus Giesing born 16 July 1917 and baptised 7 October 1917.[7]He is named as an adopted child on the death notice of Stafina Johanna Catherina Kolfer Swanepoel who died on 14 September 1940. The child's birthdate is given even though he would have been 23 years of age[8]
  • Henrik Jacobus Giesing born 25 August 1918 and baptised in Postchesftroom on 20 April 1919.[9]

Where does Paulina Gertruida Giessing, born Hansen, born 2 September 1917 fit in?[10]
