Henry Giesler was born in Appalachia, in Tennessee.
Henry and his twin brother, Jacob, were born on 19 February 1833 in Piney Flats, Sullivan County, Tennessee, USA. He was the son of Adam Giesler and Mary Magdalene (DeVault) Giesler.
In the 1850 census Henry and Jacob (age 17) were living in the household of Jonathan Watson in Division 1 in Sullivan County, Tennessee.[1][2]

Henry enlisted on 2 Apr 1862 in Morristown, Tennessee as Captain of Company F of the 59th Tennessee Infantry. On 28 July 1863, he was reimbursed $1,909 for the purchase of 83 rifles to supply his company with arms. He was promoted to Major on 19 March 1863. He was among the soldiers captured at Vicksburg on 4 July 1863 and paroled a few days later.[4] As an ordained Lutheran minister and Chaplain of the 59th Tennessee Infantry.
Henry was killed in action on 15 December 1864, near Abingdon, Virginia during the expedition of Maj. Gen. George Stoneman into Southwest Virginia that resulted in the Battle of Marion and the Second Battle of Saltville. His body was taken home to be buried in Giesler-DeVault-Feathers Cemetery, Piney Flats, Sullivan County, Tennessee.[5]
