Johannes was born in 1813 in what is now Germany. (Germany did not become a nation until 1871.) In various censuses his birth location is given as Prussia, Hesse-Homburg, and Germany. In the 1800's the map of Europe was in flux. He was born in/around Homburg, which is a small town in the state of Hesse, in the Rhineland, near Meisenheim, where he was baptized in late October, 1813. At that time, this area was part of Prussia. He migrated to the United States prior to 1842. This is known because his first child was born in Ohio in 1842. He married Margaret Schaadt who has also a immigrant from Prussia. In the 1860 census of Willshire, Ohio, Johannes, Margaret and their children are cited under the name "Gesler" from Hesse-Homburg . Their listing is directly above the entry for two families named "Shert", also from Hesse-Homburg. It seems likely that that the census taker was not good with German names. The 1870 census gives the names of these same families as Gissler and Schaat. Johannes often went by the name John. Together he and Margaret farmed in Willshire, Ohio and raised six children. He passed away in 1891 and is buried in Convoy, Ohio with his wife.
