Biography

Ruth was a Friend (Quaker)

In November of 1784 Ruth, wife of Henry, joined the Easton & Saratoga Friends Meeting by producing a certificate from the Acoaxet Monthly Meeting in Westport, MA.[1]

The Westport, Massachusetts Historical Society posted letters written by Caleb Gifford, brother of Ruth, describing their life in Easton, Washington County, where they moved in 1784. The letters were written in 1795 and are available at: http://wpthistory.org/2015/01/writing-home-18th-century/

The state lines between Massachusetts and Rhode Island changed until they were finally settled and it is possible that she was actually born in Rhode Island, but the town of Dartmouth remains her birthplace.
